Glossary - Plastering and Rendering
Here are some common terms used when discussing plastering:
Accelerators: Increases the speed of plaster setting. This helps to avoid dryout in the hot Australian dry weather and ensure normal strength when it does set.
Float and Set - Float and set is sometimes known as wet plastering. the system requires a wet undercoat plaster such as sand and cement that is troweled on the walls usually around 10 to 12mm thick. when the undercoat plaster has set to a semi firm state the skim coat is then applied. This leaves a smooth blemish free finish.
Angle Float: Is a plasterer's trowel which has flat surfaces meeting at an angle used for corner work.
Base Coat: This term is used for two coat plaster. The base coat of plaster underlies the finish. Although it is an initial thin application it is extremely strong. A base coat helps fills in voids and imperfections before applying the final finish.
Cement Rendering: is the application of a mixture of sand and cement to brick. It can be textured, coloured, or painted after application. It is generally used on external walls of a building.
Cracked Walls: Are often a result of seasonal expansion and contraction. Cracks can also occur from an impact or vibration. Tom the Plasterer can help repair cracks (small or large) using drywall putty, plastering, skimming and sanding.
Limestone Render Finish: You can render your home with a limestone finish. The Render is coloured, applied and textured to give a limestone appearance.
Plaster: Plastering will ensure that walls are smooth and used internally in buildings. A smooth wall is easier to clean and decorate. A smooth wall will help when painting or wallpapering.
Plasterboard: Internal lining boards, used in residential and commercial lightweight framed construction.
Render: Render is is a mortar mixture which is thicker than plaster. It is suitable for external walls. It contains more cement and needs to withstand different weather conditions. Tom the Plasterer recommends that all external walls should be completely covered in render to improve appearance and help make weatherproof. The walls that face towards the elements of weather will need the richest mix of render.
Sand Render Finish: You can render your home with a sand finish. The Render is coloured, applied and textured to give a sand like and coloured appearance.
